NBA ogłosiła listę 242 zawodników, którzy wstępnie zgłosili się do tegorocznego draftu. Sam draft odbędzie się 22 czerwca. Słowo „wstępnie” jest tutaj słowem kluczowym, przy którym trzeba zatrzymać się na chwilę.
Zawodnicy, który zgłosili się do tegorocznego naboru, będą mogli zmienić swoją decyzję do 12 czerwca. W tym celu będą musieli złożyć pisemną rezygnację z chęci udziału w drafcie. Jeśli chodzi o graczy NCAA, to ci, żeby utrzymać status studenta, żeby móc wrócić na uczelnię po wakacjach, będą musieli wycofać się do 31 maja.
Młodzi zawodnicy i ich agenci często decydują się przystąpić do naboru, żeby wybadać rynek, żeby wrzucić swoje nazwisko do notesów skautów i menadżerów drużyn, a potem patrzą na rezultaty. Jeśli jakiś klub zgłosi się do nich i obieca poświęcenie swojego picku właśnie na nich, wtedy zostają do naboru. Jeśli zainteresowanie jest niewielkie, wtedy się wycofują. Bywa też tak, że graczom, którzy wielkimi talentami nie są, którzy nie mogą liczyć na pierwszą rundę, a przecież takich zawodników jest najwięcej, bywa na rękę to, że nie zostaną wybrani w drafcie. Wtedy, jako „oczyszczeni”, wolni zawodnicy, mogą podpisywać umowy z kim chcą. Podkreślam, nie chodzi o topowe talenty, bo tym nadal opłaca się iść ze swoją karierą frontowymi drzwiami, co oznacza skorzystanie z gwarantowanych pieniędzy i parasola ochronnego przez co najmniej lata. Ale przykład choćby Freda VanVleeta pokazuje, że można nie tylko dostać się do ligi „od kuchni”, ale też w niej zostać i dojść do poziomu All-Star, a co za tym idzie ogromnych pieniędzy.
